World Class Cancer Care To Put Albury-Wodonga Patients First

16 November 2016

Cancer patients on the border now have the world class care and treatment they deserve, closer to home, with the opening of the new Albury Wodonga Regional Cancer Centre.

Minister for Health Jill Hennessy today joined Federal Minister for Health Sussan Ley and Member for Northern Victoria Jaclyn Symes to officially open the $65 million facility.

The modern building integrates local public and private cancer services under one roof, in a high-quality, purpose-built facility that focuses on the needs of patients and delivers the very best care and treatment.

It features 30 inpatient beds, 30 chemotherapy beds, three radiotherapy bunkers, consulting suites, a wellness centre and 140 new car parking spaces.

The centre will also reach out beyond the border through the establishment of regional information, education and research networks.

It will expand access to vital radiotherapy services on the border and throughout North East Victoria. Under a historic agreement reached in advance of the centre opening, GenesisCare now provide public radiotherapy services, at no cost to patients.

This has enabled free access to this essential cancer treatment to more than 740 patients over the last 12 months. Through the collocation of radiotherapy into the new centre, which features additional bunker capacity to grow the service, many more patients will benefit from this into the future.

Every day in Victoria, about 84 people will be diagnosed with cancer and 29 people will die from the disease.

That’s why the Andrews Labor Government has set an ambitious target to save 10,000 lives from cancer in the next 10 years. In July, we launched our Victorian Cancer Plan 2016-20, pulling together a range of initiatives to tackle cancer and better support patients through cancer prevention, detection, treatment and research.

Quotes attributable to Minister for Health Jill Hennessy

We want to give people with cancer the very best chance possible of surviving the disease – and this centre will do just that.”

“Wodonga patients can now easily access the radiotherapy services they need, closer to home and loved ones, without having to travel to Melbourne or Bendigo for lifesaving treatment.”
