Work Begins to Make Victoria More Energy Efficient and Productive

11 March 2015

Minister for Energy and Resources, Lily D’Ambrosio, today hosted a roundtable with key stakeholders in the energy industry to discuss the Government’s plans for energy efficiency and productivity.

Energy efficiency is one of the best ways for homes and businesses to reduce bills and greenhouse gas emissions.

The Andrews Labor Government is committed to helping Victorians increase their energy efficiency, which will retain and create jobs and slash Victoria's greenhouse gas emissions.

At the roundtable, Ms D’Ambrosio outlined the Government’s plan to work with consumers, industry and sector experts to develop ambitious and achievable energy efficiency measures.

The roundtable was attended by representatives of the energy efficiency industry, household and business energy consumers, the building and property sector, environmental organisations, local governments and the energy supply industry.

Developing a strong and effective energy efficiency and productivity policy is part of the Government’s plan to support local jobs in the growing sustainable energy sector.

In December, the Government announced it would retain the Victorian Energy Efficiency Target (VEET) scheme and save 2000 jobs.

The Government will review the VEET scheme in the first half of 2015, with a view to strengthening it even further. This will include an open and transparent consultation process, starting in April.

The Government will also develop a Victorian Renewable Energy Action Plan, which will outline a comprehensive set of measures to attract Victoria’s share of the $36 billion of investment in renewable energy forecast to occur in Australia by 2020.
