VPSC Report Into Dr Sonia Sharp

27 April 2015

The Victorian Public Sector Commissioner has completed a review of the recruitment of Dr Sonia Sharp to the position of Deputy Secretary, Early Childhood and School Education Group.

The review was commissioned following a public inquiry in the UK into the management of sexual exploitation in Rotherham Council where Dr Sharp previously held a senior role.

The VPSC investigated the Department’s recruitment process, not Dr Sharp’s role in the child protection failings at Rotherham.

The review concluded that:

  • Dr Sharp’s recruitment was conducted in accordance with appropriate processes for senior public sector appointments; and
  • There was no specific matter arising from the review’s assessment of Dr Sharp’s recruitment or other relevant material that provides reasonable grounds to find that Dr Sharp’s continued employment in DET is incompatible with the maintenance of the high standards of integrity and conduct required in the public sector in Victoria.

The Government acknowledges the findings of the review and has provided a copy of the report to Dr Sharp.

Quotes attributable to the Special Minister of State, Gavin Jennings

“The Government makes no apology for raising these issues nor for seeking a thorough investigation after these very serious issues came to light.”

“I am advised that Dr Sharp is now seeking opportunities outside of government and I wish her well.”
