Victorian secondary students will learn more about the risks of gambling during their maths classes using new resources which can be integrated into their curriculum.
Minister for Consumer Affairs, Gaming and Liquor Regulation Marlene Kairouz was joined by Member for Northern Metropolitan Region Nazih Elasmar to launch the resources today at an event marking the start of Responsible Gambling Awareness Week.
The resources are designed for Year 10 to 12 students, and use role playing in maths classes to challenge misconceptions around the chances of winning.
They will help teachers incorporate gambling education into the curriculum and deliver information on how young people can seek help with problem gambling.
Available to schools later this term to assist teachers with their curriculum planning for 2017, the resources were developed by the Victorian Responsible Gambling Foundation in partnership with the Mathematical Association of Victoria (MAV).
MAV found students who had participated in the program’s trial improved their understanding of the long term outcome of random events, and the illusion of control in gambling, while their belief in luck had decreased.
