Victorian Education And Training On The National Stage

17 November 2016

Victoria’s best apprentices, trainees and employers will be recognised at the Australian Training Awards in Darwin tonight.

Among the group of six individuals and five local organisations representing Victoria is apprentice Steven Jeffery who studied a Certificate III in Carpentry at Swinburne University of Technology.

Steven has taken the skills he used in Victoria around the world, helping people in India and Cambodia by working with local tradespeople to pass on his knowledge.

Other Victorian finalists include Metricon Homes which is competing for the Industry Collaboration Award and Metro Trains Melbourne which is in the running for the Large Employer of the Year Award.

TAFEs, community providers and high quality private training providers change Victorian lives for the better – that’s why for two years, the Andrews Labor Government has been investing in TAFE and restoring confidence to the training system.

From January Skills First will be rolled out, delivering on the things that matter most to people – a stable training system that industry and students can have confidence in – making sure every Victorian has access to real training so they can get a real job.

The Labor Government is putting people first by investing in TAFE, taking action against those training providers who don’t meet student needs and making sure industry has a skilled workforce for tomorrow.

Quotes attributable to Minister for Training and Skills Gayle Tierney

“I congratulate all of our finalists, they’ve worked so hard to get where they are and they all deserve their chance to shine.”

“It’s awards like this that put our best apprentices, trainees and training providers on the national stage, showcasing the world-class training that’s offered in Victoria.”

“Our record investment in training and TAFE is changing the lives of everyday Victorians – while also making sure industry has the skills it needs for the jobs of today and tomorrow.”
