Tech Schools: Delivering The Future Of Education For Victorian Students

25 April 2016

The locations of 10 state-of-the-art Tech Schools have been announced today, with $116 million allocated to build the new facilities.

The Victorian Budget 2016/2017 includes $24 million over four years for running costs.

Unlike the tech schools of the past, these new training opportunities will be offered alongside regular schooling, so students don’t have to choose between the two.

The modern Tech Schools will be hosted by TAFEs and universities, with input from local businesses and industry in designing the courses.

The host TAFEs and universities for each new Tech School are:

  • Ballarat Federation University, Ballarat campus
  • Banyule Melbourne Polytechnic, Greensborough campus
  • Bendigo La Trobe University, Flora Hill campus
  • Casey Chisholm Institute, Berwick campus
  • Geelong Gordon Institute, Geelong City campus
  • Gippsland Federation Training, Morwell campus
  • Monash Monash University, Clayton campus and John Monash Science School
  • Whittlesea Melbourne Polytechnic, Epping campus
  • Wyndham Victoria University, Werribee campus
  • Yarra Ranges Box Hill Institute, Lilydale Lakeside campus

These 10 Tech Schools will open throughout 2017 and 2018 and will use leading edge technology to deliver applied STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) education, as well as critical employment skills.

Quotes attributable to Acting Premier James Merlino

“We promised 10 Tech Schools across Victoria, and we’re delivering them. This will give thousands of kids the best possible opportunity to get the skills they need for the jobs they want.

“We are making Victoria the Education State and ensuring that students get the vital STEM skills they need for the jobs of tomorrow.”

Quotes attributable to Minister for Training and Skills Steve Herbert

“Our Tech Schools will allow students to get hands-on technical training while they continue their studies. Tech schools don’t replace a comprehensive education – they’re part of it.”

“These Tech Schools will become centres of excellence, bringing together TAFE, universities, industry and local businesses.”
