Sydney Rd Cyclist Safety Improvements To Be Fast-Tracked

03 April 2015

Labor Member for Brunswick, Jane Garrett, has welcomed the fast-tracking of $1.6 million in works to improve the safety of cyclists and other road users on Sydney Rd, Brunswick.

Stage one improvements will include new green bicycle lanes at intersections, building speed humps at Sydney Rd side streets, banning right turns at Edward St, Hope St and Union St during peak hours and the implementation of a permanent 40km/h speed limit.

17 car spaces will be removed from Sydney Rd, but a further 25 new car spaces will be created in side streets.

VicRoads will begin works in mid-April, instead of August.

The second stage of the works, which will commence in the middle of the year, will include the installation of 20 electronic ‘Give Way to Pedestrians’ signs as well as bicycle-priority green head start boxes.

Drivers and pedestrians will benefit from these improvements, which run along Sydney Rd from Barkly St to Albion St.

The entire project is due for completion in late 2015.

The safety improvements for Sydney Road were recently announced under the Andrews Labor Government’s Safe System Road Infrastructure Program.
