Supporting Victorians living with a disability

02 May 2017

Victorians living with a disability deserve the same opportunities as every other Victorian.

That’s why under the Victorian Budget 2017/18, $69.2 million will go to assisting Victorians with a disability to overcome barriers to employment, education and housing.

Further funds will ensure Victoria is ready ahead of the implementation of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), with $36.3 million allocated to support a smooth transition.

The introduction of the NDIS will profoundly change the way disability services are provided in Australia as Victorians living with a disability are given greater choice, further control and more opportunities.

Over the course of the NDIS rollout, approximately 105,000 Victorians will transition to the Scheme.

Young adults will be supported through $19.9 million to provide an additional 256 packages of essential supports for young people needing assistance during the day to participate in the community after they leave school.

This new funding is in addition to Victoria’s investment of $2.5 billion per year by 2019 into the NDIS, and the $26 million announced to support Victoria’s disability workforce.

The Andrews Labor Government will also invest $13.6 million to improve the oversight powers of the Disability Services Commissioner and implementation of the State Disability Plan.

Quotes attributed to Minister for Housing, Disability and Ageing Martin Foley

“We’re making sure Victoria has a place for everyone, and that people living with a disability get the opportunities they deserve.”

“We stand with these Victorians, both in the transition to the NDIS and by making sure their rights are protected by the Disability Services Commissioner and the State Disability Plan.”
