Supercars Championship Races Into Melbourne

30 May 2017

Fans who attend the 2018 Formula 1® Australian Grand Prix will experience a Supercars Championship round for the first time in history.

Minister for Tourism and Major Events John Eren joined representatives of the Australian Grand Prix Corporation, Virgin Australia Supercars Championship and Supercar drivers in Albert Park today to announce that the Supercar race at next year’s Grand Prix will be a points round of the Championship calendar.

Supercars have previously competed at the Grand Prix as an exhibition event, with no Championship points on offer.

The introduction of a Supercars Championship round is another exciting addition to the action-packed race program, and will make for more competitive viewing.

The points race is expected to attract greater local and international interest – meaning more visitors and a further boost to local businesses.

The Supercars Championship is one of Australia’s largest sports, and is an important part of Victoria’s massive major events calendar.

That’s why the partnership and contractual agreement between the Australian Grand Prix Corporation and Supercars has also been extended for a further six years until 2023, meaning it’s here to stay.
