Smarter planning for a stronger Victoria

02 May 2017

The Andrews Labor Government is getting the planning right to make Victorian cities and towns even better places to live.

Our population is expected to top 10 million people by 2051, that’s why we’re investing $30 billion in road and rail infrastructure, but we know that it’s also crucial that we put the proper planning processes in place. That way we can retain our world-class liveability and give growing communities the services, transport links, and infrastructure they deserve.

The Victorian Budget 2017/18 invests more than $60 million to do just that.

By planning properly for growth, we can ensure all Victorians can access a job, public transport and community facilities – no matter where they live. It will mean a stronger Melbourne and a more sustainable regional Victoria.

The new Plan Melbourne is our blueprint to ensure we don’t just manage growth – but become stronger and fairer too. The Budget includes $12.5 million to continue implementing this once-in-a-generation plan.

Geelong is one of Australia’s leading regional centres and we want it to stay that way. The Geelong Authority and Revitalising Central Geelong Action Plan is creating more jobs and more opportunities for small businesses, and the Budget provides $15 million for that work to keep producing results.

Our heritage is a reminder of our rich history and our state-listed heritage assets give local communities a great sense of pride. A $5 million boost to the Living Heritage Program will ensure that more communities can repair and restore the sites that mean so much, to so many.

The previous Liberal Government botched Fishermans Bend, recklessly rezoning land giving developers a windfall without giving families a community. The Budget invests $10 million to deliver our re-cast vision for Fishermans Bend – a place where families can live, learn and play in a healthy environment.

It includes funding for the Ferrars Street Education and Community Precinct and Montague Park, giving local kids the education they deserve and a great place to get together.

The Budget also includes:

  • $11.6 million to establish Land Use Victoria, which will ensure the community gets better value from the Government’s land portfolio
  • $6.55 million to deliver the Yarra River Action Plan, protecting one of Victoria’s great natural treasures
