Singapore Deal Cements Victoria As A World Leader In Health

26 May 2017

Victoria will play a major role in supporting Singapore to build modern, state-of-the-art hospitals as part of a new Andrews Labor Government deal that will also create more jobs at home.

Minister for Health Jill Hennessy today met Singapore’s Minister for Health, the Honourable Gan Kim Yong MP and witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Singapore and Victoria.

The deal is another unique opportunity to showcase Victoria’s achievements and expertise in building state-of-the-art hospitals such as the VCCC, health system design and delivery, and create new collaborative partnerships.

The meeting was the first stop in a trip focussed on building international ties between Victoria’s globally-renowned health and medical research institutions in Singapore and India in order to drive further investment in Victoria’s economy.

The Labor Government’s International Health Strategy 2016-2020: Partnering for a healthy and prosperous future outlines our vision to grow Victoria as a global exporter of goods and services in health, health education, aged care, and health and medical research.

The healthcare sector contributes more than $30 billion to the Victorian economy a year and employs more than 130,000 Victorians.

The Government is also developing a new India Strategy that builds on the unique connections we share and strengthens our economic, social and cultural relationship.

India is the world’s fastest growing large economy and Victoria’s trade with India has nearly doubled over the last decade, led by growth in international education. Many of our education ties are based in the health and technology sectors.

Visiting New Delhi, Bangalore and Hyderabad, Minister Hennessy will meet with senior government representatives, key health, medical technology, and research and education centres including the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, and tour the Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute and Research Centre and Medanta Hospital.

A key focus of the visit will be to promote Victoria’s expertise across the health sector, providing opportunities for partnerships with India’s vastly developing digital health industry, start up sector, and in specific health care streams such as trauma medicine, infectious diseases and cancer.
