Securing the best and brightest teachers for our kids

02 May 2017

The Andrews Labor Government is working to give every Victorian child a great teacher, with our best and brightest teachers to be deployed across Victoria to help transform school results.

As part of the Victorian Budget 2017/18, the Andrews Labor Government will invest $456.6 million to meet the ongoing needs of students and teachers.

This includes $50.7 million to make sure our students have access to great educators, including new Turnaround Teams, made up of an executive principal and two leading teachers, who will be deployed in underperforming schools to help lift results.

The investment will also see 25 of Victoria’s best teachers join Specialist Teaching Teams, working with teachers and schools across the state.

Further funds will also go towards employing more Executive Principals, who take a hands-on role in turning around underperforming schools, as well as School Improvement Partnerships, which link our lowest performing schools with our highest, allowing them to share ideas for improvement.

The Budget also invests $9.7 million towards the Excellence in Teacher Education reforms. Unveiled in November last year, these landmark reforms will raise the quality of teacher education and training.

This includes $4.6 million to pair 10 000 graduates with more experienced teachers, ensuring they get the support and guidance they need. $3.1 million will be invested in Teach for Australia and National Exceptional Teachers for Disadvantaged Schools programs to train around 250 high-achieving teachers to work in schools across the state.

The Budget also features a $24 million investment to lift the quality of teaching and school leadership, including $18.3 million to expand the Professional Learning Communities initiative to an extra 200 schools.

The initiative is based on the most successful teaching models from around the world, and will improve the skills of the state’s teachers, encouraging them to collaborate and implement the latest teaching developments in their classrooms.
