Season Extended For Van Gogh At The NGV

15 June 2017

It’s the fastest selling exhibition in the National Gallery of Victoria’s history and the largest exhibition of Van Gogh masterpieces this city has seen, and now audiences will have an extra chance to see Van Gogh and the Seasons before the works return to their homes across the globe.

Minister for Creative Industries, Martin Foley announced today that opening hours for the exhibition will be extended in its final weeks including a special 24-hour viewing on the final weekend – from 10pm on Saturday 8 July to 10pm on Sunday 9 July.

The exhibition was scheduled to close on Sunday 9 July but has been extended until Wednesday 12 July due to the extraordinary demand. For its final three days it will be open from 8am until 11pm.

To accommodate both night owls and early birds, the exhibition is also now open from 9am every weekday and 8am on weekends.

Van Gogh and the Seasons is part of the Andrews Labor Government’s Melbourne Winter Masterpieces series, and has welcomed more than 230,000 visitors since opening on April 28.

The exhibition has been a drawcard for audiences of all ages and visitors from across the globe.

Van Gogh and the Seasons is the 22nd exhibition in the Melbourne Winter Masterpieces (MWM) series established in 2004 to bring the world’s best art to Melbourne each year.

The NGV is already Australia’s most popular gallery and earlier this year it was recognised as the 19th most visited gallery in the world alongside the likes of Paris’ Musee d’Orsay and New York’s Museum of Modern Art.

Once the Van Gogh exhibition closes, NGV’s next drawcard will be The House of Dior fashion exhibition which will open in August, followed by the NGV Triennial – a major free summer exhibition featuring the work of 60 contemporary artists and designers from more than 30 countries.

The second 2017 Melbourne Winter Masterpieces exhibition Wallace and Gromit and Friends: The Magic of Aardman opens at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image on 29 June.
