Schools Inspire Victoria At The ResourceSmart Education Awards

14 October 2015

Minister for Environment, Climate Change and Water Lisa Neville has congratulated Winters Flat Primary School who has received this year’s top ResourceSmart School of the Year Award.

The Castlemaine-based school was presented the top award for their leadership and local action in incorporating sustainability measures in their school.

The ResourceSmart Education Awards are Victoria’s largest sustainability awards program that recognise Victorian schools, early childhood services, students and teachers for implementing measures to reduce their environmental footprint.

Winters Flat Primary School is an impressive leader in education for a more sustainable future, embedding sustainability in their curriculum and engaging students, parents and the broader community.

Minister Neville also congratulated all schools that have been involved in the Awards, including ResourceSmart School of the Year finalists, Bentleigh West Primary School, St Louis de Montfort’s Primary School and Footscray City College.

This year a record number of impressive entries were received, with over 180 entries from more than 120 schools across the state, demonstrating Victorian schools’ commitment to practical local action on climate change.

This year, the Andrews Labor Government committed $1 million towards the program to help Victorian schools incorporate sustainability into their curriculum and provide practical learning initiatives for students and professional learning opportunities for teachers.

Since 2011, over 1,200 Victorian schools have minimised their waste, saved energy and water, promoted biodiversity and reduced greenhouse gas emissions, collectively saving $15 million through their participation in the ResourceSmart Schools program.
