Minister for Education James Merlino and Member for Mordialloc Tim Richardson today presented a 5 Star ResourceSmart Certification to St Louis de Montfort Primary School in Aspendale for their award-winning Sustainability Precinct.
The Precinct features an outdoor kitchen, vegetable gardens, compost, worm farms, a propagating house, wetlands, permaculture area, aquaponics, an orchard and animal enclosures with chooks, ducks, geese, rabbits, guinea pigs and birds.
The Precinct was developed in 2013 and has since been recognised as one of the best school-based sustainability projects in Victoria.
St Louis de Montfort was announced the winner of the Education Category of the 2014 Premier’s Sustainability Awards.
The Precinct also received two awards in the 2014 ResourceSmart Schools Awards, for Water Sustainability, and for Primary School Teacher of the Year for their Sustainability Leader, Julie Wynne.
The Precinct also took out the 2014 Kevin Heinze Perpetual Award, which is the top honours at the Victorian Schools Garden Awards.
The 5 Star Sustainability Certification represents a big milestone on the school’s sustainability journey, and recognises the hard work of teachers, staff and students at St Louis de Montfort Primary School.
