The Andrews Labor Government is getting rid of the dangerous and congested level crossing on Grange Road in Alphington, and work starts next year.
Member for Northcote Fiona Richardson revealed today that the crossing will be removed by lowering the Hurstbridge line so it runs under Grange Road, safely separating trains from traffic.
The announcement follows detailed planning, engineering and design work by technical experts, and extensive consultation with local residents and businesses.
The Grange Road level crossing is one of Melbourne’s worst, with boom gates down for a third of the morning peak, causing frustration, distress and delay.
The project is part of the Government’s transformation of the Hurstbridge line, which will remove the dangerous Lower Plenty Road level crossing, rebuild Rosanna Station and duplicate the line from Heidelberg to Rosanna.
Construction on the Hurstbridge line upgrade will begin next year and be complete by 2019, creating space for more frequent reliable services on the Hurstbridge line through Alphington.
The Labor Government is also building a second Chandler Highway bridge to relieve pressure on one of Victoria’s most congested traffic chokepoints.
