Record Meth Bust Keeps Drugs Off Our Streets

04 April 2017

Minister for Police Lisa Neville today praised the work of Victoria Police alongside the Australian Federal Police to seize Australia’s largest haul of methamphetamine.

The seizure of almost 903 kilograms of the drug in Melbourne’s east has resulted in two men being charged for their alleged role in trafficking the drugs.

Ms Neville today joined the Federal Minister for Justice Michael Keenan, Victoria Police and Australian Federal Police to outline the operation.

The drug is a continued scourge on our society and the Government thanks the hard work and dedication of all our law enforcement agencies who were part of this seizure.

The Andrews Labor Government is also continuing to step up its fight against ice dealers and reducing the harm caused by these dangerous drugs.

This includes tougher penalties for those caught peddling these drugs to our communities.

The first two stages of the Labor Government’s Ice Action Plan has invested over $100 million to expand treatment services, provide more support for families, protect frontline workers and give extra powers to close down manufacturers and make our community safer.

The Labor Government’s $103 million Ice Action Plan is expanding treatment services, providing more support for families, protecting frontline workers and giving extra powers to close down manufacturers and make our community safer.

The Labor Government is also providing a record funding boost to frontline police resources with 3135 new police to be recruited over the next five years, on top of normal attrition recruitment.

This includes funding 24 additional forensic officers and staff for two new forensic hubs in regional Victoria to fast-track investigations into ice trafficking and other drugs.

This boost in frontline police is the lynchpin of the Community Safety Statement 2017 – a plan that will keep Victorians safe, prevent harm in our communities and hold criminals to account.
