Local councils can revamp public spaces with CCTV and other security upgrades with grants of up to $250,000 now available for projects, as part of the Andrews Labor Government’s work to keep Victorians safe.
Visiting the Jewell of Brunswick today, Parliamentary Secretary for Justice Ben Carroll opened applications for the latest round of Public Safety Infrastructure Fund (PSIF) grants and encouraged councils to take advantage.
Open to all Victorian councils, the grants can be used for projects which upgrade security infrastructure, improve community safety and build confidence in popular shopping and entertainment precincts, parks and public spaces.
Councils can use the funding for:
- installation of Closed Circuit Television systems (CCTV) in public places
- streetscape improvements to reduce the risk of crime and encourage local residents to use the area
- lighting upgrades and other security or safety measures
Moreland City Council’s new and award-winning public space in Brunswick is an example of how councils are partnering with government and other agencies to prevent crime and improve community safety.
The Labor Government provided $19.4 million in the Victorian Budget 2016/17 for crime prevention initiatives.
The PSIF grants form part of the broader Community Crime Prevention Program, which works with councils, communities and not-for-profit groups to target the root causes of crime.
Applications for the latest round of grants close at 4pm on Friday, 2 September, 2016.
