John Brumby was sworn in as the 45th Premier of Victoria on 30 July, 2007.
His first official function as Premier was to open the Australian Synchrotron – a major project he was instrumental in developing that will revolutionise scientific research and development in Australia.
As Premier, John Brumby leads a Labor Government which has, since 1999, rebuilt Victoria’s infrastructure and services while maintaining strong budget surpluses and managing a vibrant, growing economy.
Since becoming Premier, John Brumby has:

travelled to Bali for Australia’s ratification of the Kyoto Treaty;

fast tracked the delivery of 8 new passenger trains to address increased patronage on Melbourne’s rail network;

unveiled the plans for the new Royal Children’s Hospital;
-
announced the building of 11 modern schools using innovative Public Private Partnerships;
-
engaged in a series of public roundtable consultations in key areas of public policy;
-
announced significant steps to tackle chronic disease and preventable illnesses such as diabetes; and
-
for the first time in Victoria announced a Statement of Legislative Intent providing Victorians with the chance to have a direct say on Bills going to Parliament.
Before becoming Premier, John Brumby served as Treasurer and Minister for Regional and Rural Development – leading economic and regulation reform in the Labor Government and establishing Australia’s first Regional Infrastructure Development Fund. John Brumby was also appointed as Victoria’s first Minister for Innovation in February 2002.
John Brumby was elected to the Victorian Parliament in 1993. He was Leader of the Opposition for almost six years, overseeing the rebuilding of the ALP and the development of new policies to revive and reinvigorate country Victoria. Between 1983 and 1990, he was the Federal Member for Bendigo during the Hawke Government and served as Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Employment, Education and Training.
Born in 1953, John Brumby completed a Bachelor of Commerce from Melbourne University in 1974 and a Diploma of Education from the State College of Victoria, Rusden, in 1975.
He was the recipient of a Centenary Medal in 2001, a National Leadership Award for Tourism and Infrastructure Contribution in 2005 and a Research Australia Leadership and Innovation Award in 2006.
John Brumby is married to Rosemary McKenzie. Together, John and Rosemary have three children – Georgia, Elizabeth and Nicholas.
