Achievements and policies implemented

  • Revised Powerline Bushfire Safety Taskforce (PBST) terms of reference to fully implement recommendations of the Victorian Bushfires Royal Commission to reduce bushfire risk and released consultation paper on the PBSTfor public input

  • Introduced legislation to enhance powers of EnergySafe Victoria to reduce bushfire risk

  • Allocated $50 million for a Safer Electricity Assets Fund to begin the work to reduce risk of bushfires started by electricity assets, pending the recommendations of the PBST

  • Released revised Bushfire Safety Policy Framework with the aim of improving bushfire safety for all Victorians

  • Developed Victoria's first fire services reform action plan to ensure the outcomes of the Royal Commission are delivered and reform the manner in which agencies operate together to meet the changing needs of the community

  • Supported recycling through a $3 million scheme to boost recycling and waste recovery initiatives across metropolitan and regional Victoria

  • Supported investment in geoscience with $625,000 allocated in the 2011–12 Victorian Budget

  • Launched the Flood Recovery Community Infrastructure Fund on 1 July 2011 to provide funding to support flood affected Councils and Crown Land reserve Committees of Management to help repair flood-damaged community infrastructure following the 2011 floods

  • Doubled the greenhouse gas reduction target under the Energy Saver Incentive scheme from 2.7 million tonnes/CO2 to 5.7 million tonnes/CO2 for 2012–15 and extended the scheme to business from 2012

  • Introduced legislation to enhance the powers of the Essential Services Commission to prevent rorting

  • Terminated Labor's unfunded plan to negotiate for the closure of two units of Hazelwood Power Station

  • Lobbying the Australian Energy Regulator (AER) on behalf of all Victorians to demand that network pricing decisions are fair and in the best interests of the community

  • Commenced comprehensive smart meter cost benefit review, as recommended by the Auditor-General

  • Initiated and completed safety review of meter installation conducted by EnergySafe Victoria

  • Supported feed-in tariffs which provide fair reward by introducing legislation for a new Transitional Feed In Tariff from 1 January 2012, to replace the Premium Feed In Tariff which will reach its statutory capacity cap by the end of 2011

  • Provided $30 million and worked with the Commonwealth to support funding bid for the next stage of the CarbonNet carbon capture and storage project

  • Promoted research and development in carbon capture and storage through membership of the CO2CRC and providing $500,000 to establish a new Centre for Carbon Capture and Storage at the University of Melbourne

  • Allocated $41 million over 4 years in the 2011–12 Victorian Budget for the Energy Technology Innovation Strategy (ETIS) competitive grant funding program

  • Supported investment in geoscience with $625,000 allocated in the 2011–12 Victorian Budget

  • Preserved the independence of the Mining Warden

  • Introduced legislation to modernise the licence agreement for Alcoa's Anglesea mine, supporting regional jobs and strengthening environmental protections
