One-Stop Jobs Shop Helping Former Automotive Workers

30 August 2017

A one-stop shop in Broadmeadows for people seeking career and training advice is helping connect former automotive workers with high quality training and real jobs.

Minister for Training and Skills Gayle Tierney joined Parliamentary Secretary for Industry and Employment Vicki Ward and Member for Broadmeadows Frank McGuire at Kangan Institute’s Broadmeadows Skills and Jobs Centre for an Open Day with local employers and former Ford workers.

The centre, located at the TAFE’s Pearcedale Parade campus in Broadmeadows, is supporting close to 430 workers impacted by the closure of Ford in Broadmeadows.

Since it opened last year, the centre has helped more than 1600 people get the skills development, job readiness, and training and career support they need to find a job or to move into further training.

The Andrews Labor Government established Skills and Jobs Centres in 2015, with 30 locations now up and running across Victoria, offering support for prospective students, employers, apprentices, trainees, and unemployed or transitioning workers.

They provide a range of services including resume writing, interview skills, counselling, group workshops and personalised training advice.

They also work with Jobs Victoria and Centrelink to ensure clients get coordinated support services.

To allow the Broadmeadows Skills and Jobs Centre to continue its good work, Kangan will receive $410,000 from the Labor Government’s Skills First TAFE Community Service Fund.

The centre’s open day coincided with National Skills Week 2017, which runs until Sunday and highlights the variety of exciting and rewarding careers pathways available through Vocational Education and Training.
