Budding actors, musicians and dancers at Box Forest College showed off
their talents in a new $1.4 million state-of-the art the community
performing arts centre, officially opened by Premier John Brumby today.
“Education remains this Government’s number one priority which is why we are investing in the best resources young Victorians need to have the best learning opportunities,” Mr Brumby said.
“Not only does this centre offer students at this and surrounding schools an excellent facility for theatre, dance and music workshops and performances, it also provides a venue for use by local communities.
“It is fantastic to see that this centre has already been used by the community for a drama production, church services, calisthenics and volleyball. These are just a few examples of the exciting things that will be taking place in the centre.
“Schools are at the heart of local communities and the Victorian Government is committed to opening the school gates even wider through shared-facility partnerships.”
Education Minister Bronwyn Pike said shared school facilities with the community expanded educational opportunities, supported community engagement and strengthened communities.
“Students at Box Forest College have already shown a gift in the arts through success in the Wakakirri competition, which saw students writing and performing an original song,” Ms Pike said.
“This centre will encourage more and more students to take a keen interest in the arts and allow them to develop their performance skills, as well as showcase their set-building and costume making talents.”
The project transformed the old school hall to a facility with flexible theatre options, a seating capacity for up to 500 people, and improved environmentally-friendly amenities.
The Victorian Government provided $700,000 for the project, Moreland City Council contributed $500,000 and $200,000 came from college funds.
Ms Pike said the project was another example of the work being undertaken as part of the Brumby Government’s $1.9 billion Victorian Schools Plan to rebuild, renovate or extend all Victorian Government schools.
