Minister for Regional Development, Jaala Pulford, today visited Koondrook to inspect the recently completed wharf redevelopment that will see more visitors flock to the region.
The project has opened up business and investment opportunities that will boost the local economy, and has created 27 new full time jobs and secured 50 existing jobs.
The $2 million project was supported with $500,000 from the Victorian Government under the Murray-Darling Basin Regional Economic Diversification Program, with additional investment provided by Gannawarra Shire Council and the Federal Government.
The project was designed to complement the pristine natural setting on the banks of the Murray River. The wharf has been constructed with locally-sourced river red gum timber and includes:
- Mooring facilities to support recreational and commercial activities including paddle steamer access
- Casual access to the Murray River foreshore to support a range of recreational activities
- Signage about the original wharf and surrounding riverfront area and;
- Deck access to frame key river views and support events and activities.
The upgraded riverfront is expected to attract an additional 4,000 day visitors and 2,800 night visitors every year, and will draw recreational and tourism related projects to the area.
The Labor Government has identified the visitor economy as a key driver for regional Victoria’s prosperity, with the sector contributing $11.5 billion to the regional economy and generating 114,400 jobs annually.
