New Western Women’s & Children’s Hospital Under Way

29 July 2015

The Andrews Labor Government has commenced its search for a major construction company to build the new $200 million Western Women’s and Children’s Hospital.

The Western Women’s and Children’s Hospital will be a multi-storey facility with 20 maternity delivery rooms, 237 beds, 39 special care nursery cots, four theatres and additional clinics.

With the number of births at Sunshine Hospital projected to exceed 7,000 per year by 2026, this new hospital will cater for the future needs of one of the fastest growing areas in Australia.

It will mean more women in Melbourne’s west will be able to give birth and access children’s services closer to home, while also freeing up beds at Sunshine Hospital for other health services.

Expressions of Interest are now open to appoint a builder for the new hospital.

Design consultants have already been engaged to commence work on the new state-of-art facility. They include Lyons Pty Ltd (architects), Waterman AHW Pty Ltd (building services engineers), the Sweett Group (quantity surveyors) and PLP Building Surveyors Pty Ltd.

The construction company will work with this team to develop the design of the new hospital to meet the highest quality standards of modern healthcare, before building the new world class hospital from the ground up.

Western Health clinicians and nurses will provide vital insights throughout the design process to ensure the new hospital delivers the best possible care for patients.

Preliminary work for the new hospital will be carried out over the next year, with main construction works to commence in late 2016.

The Labor Government has invested an extra $2.1 billion in Victoria’s health system to ensure Victorians can get the care they need when they need it.

As part of the $200 million Hospital Beds Rescue Fund, Western Health has received funding to expand its critical care capacity at Footscray and Sunshine Hospitals by four new critical care beds which will treat an additional 484 patients each year.
