New Starting Gates For Flemington And Cranbourne

19 January 2017

The Andrews Labor Government today announced a joint funding package of more than $160,000 to install new practice starting gates at Flemington Racecourse and Cranbourne Training Complex.

The Government is contributing more than $80,000 through the Victorian Racing Industry Fund (VRIF) and Racing Victoria (RV) is matching the contribution.

The existing practice gates at both Flemington and Cranbourne have become increasingly unreliable, requiring ongoing repairs to maintain them at an acceptable standard.

The Cranbourne Training Complex and Flemington Racecourse will receive almost 80,000 each for the new gates.

The gates will meet improved safety designs and will benefit track riders, jockeys, horses and barrier attendants. The Cranbourne gates were delivered in November and the Flemington gates are expected to arrive later this month.

The Cranbourne Training Complex and Flemington Racecourse are the largest training venues in the state and conduct more than 100 sets of trials and jump outs each year. More than 170 trainers use the venues to train over 2,500 horses.

The racing industry in metropolitan and outer Melbourne generates more than $1.87 billion for the Victorian economy and helps sustain more than 17,300 full-time equivalent jobs locally.
