New Partnership To Protect And Create Victorian Jobs

20 May 2017

More local jobs will be created and protected, under the next wave of industry policy reforms to be developed by the end of the year in a new Victorian Jobs Partnership.

Premier Daniel Andrews today announced the Victorian Jobs Partnership, to give Victorian workers the full benefit of our economic success, and protect local jobs in a rapidly changing global economy.

The Partnership will build on the successful local content, social procurement and industry assistance initiatives of the Andrews Labor Government, and get more Victorians into work.

Victoria now leads the nation in jobs growth – with more jobs created in Victoria over the last year than in the rest of the country combined. This is driven by the Labor Government supporting industry to create jobs, and a massive infrastructure pipeline that alone is creating more than 50,000 jobs.

The Labor Government’s industry policies have put more Victorians in work, including 4,000 apprentices, trainees or cadets through the Major Projects Skills Guarantee.

Level crossings around Melbourne are being built with 100% Australian steel, while new minimum local content requirements are creating thousands of jobs, including 1,600 just on our historic new High Capacity Metro Trains.

The Victorian Jobs Partnership will embark on the next wave of industry and jobs reform – new policies to protect manufacturing jobs and ensure through contracts that more projects and more materials are made in Victoria, by Victorians.

It will work to support manufacturing industries, address skills gaps to ensure workers are available locally, and encourage more women into construction and engineering roles.

It will look at new ways to partner with industry RTOs, TAFEs and universities – not cut them – and train more apprentices, trainees and cadets to secure a long-term workforce.

And it will further the work of unions and industry in partnering with local social providers to give a hand to disadvantaged Victorians.

The Partnership will be chaired by the Premier, and bring together key unions, as well as industry, academia, and government, beginning with the Victorian Jobs Partnership Summit held in coming months with 50 delegates.

That work will then be progressed throughout 2017, with a new range of initiatives in place by the end of the year.

Quotes attributable to Premier Daniel Andrews

"We’ve already created more than 200,000 jobs, and this partnership will ensure that Victorian workers keep coming first."

"By working together, we will ensure that we continue to buy local, build local, and protect local jobs."
