The Andrews Labor Government’s new Canadian Regional Park was officially opened today, securing the park for future generations of Ballarat residents, as well as providing important recreational and tourism opportunities.

Premier Daniel Andrews today joined Member for Buninyong Geoff Howard and community members to celebrate the Park’s opening.

The 641 hectare Park located on the edge of Ballarat offers a wide range of recreational opportunities including walking, mountain bike riding and horse riding in selected areas, as well as cultural experiences.

It will help protect local native flora and fauna, including threatened Yarra Gums, as well as providing habitat for resident koalas and other native animals and birds. It also protects a vital north-south wildlife corridor.

Joining in the celebrations were representatives of the Friends of Canadian Corridor, a key community organisation representing 40 community groups who advocated for the park to be saved from potential development.

The Labor Government worked closely with the community group to make the Park a reality.

Parks Victoria will now manage the land and will work in partnership with the community on decision making, park planning and delivery.

An extensive community consultation is underway to shape the new park and has been helped by a $2 million contribution from the Labor Government for things such as walking tracks, signage, shelters and revegetation.

The Labor Government will also work with traditional owners and the community to find a new name for the Park, which acknowledges its location in Wadawurrung country.
