MPavilion Finds A New Home In Docklands

22 August 2016

MPavilion 2015 has opened its doors to the Docklands community and breathed new life into the precinct.

Minister for Major Projects Jacinta Allan, together with Deputy Lord Mayor Susan Riley and Naomi Milgrom AO, Chair of the Naomi Milgrom Foundation, officially opened MPavilion 2015 today at its new permanent home at the corner of Collins Street and Harbour Esplanade in Docklands.

MPavilion is a yearly architecture and design event introduced by the Naomi Milgrom Foundation, with support from the City of Melbourne and the Victorian Government.

MPavilion 2015, designed by internationally renowned architect Amanda Levete of AL_A, creates the sensation of a forest canopy, consisting of large translucent petals supported by slender columns.

Levete was commissioned by Milgrom to create a temporary pavilion that could be relocated to a permanent home.

By the end of its program at Queen Victoria Gardens in February 2016, it had seen 76,000 people attend more than 400 events.

The third annual commission, MPavilion 2016, has been awarded to acclaimed Indian architect Bijoy Jain of Studio Mumbai and will open to the public on 5 October 2016 at Queen Victoria Gardens.

To celebrate its new home, the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra (MSO) will perform at all three MPavilions on 11 December for ‘3 Pavilions Day’. The performance coincides with MSO’s 110th Anniversary.
