The Andrews Labor Government is getting on with strengthening the Victorian Institute of Sport (VIS) and ensuring Victoria remains the nation’s top breeding ground for elite athletes.
Minister for Sport John Eren today announced a $300,000 funding boost for a new VIS outreach program to unearth sporting talent in our regions and update its computer and data management systems.
Part of the boost includes a $200,000 Regional Community Outreach and Roadshow initiative that will see VIS experts and talent scouts visit communities across Victoria to spot promising young athletes and coaches of the future.
The Roadshows will also feature education and training on healthy eating, exercise, and injury prevention and rehabilitation, inspiring more young people to get active and join a grassroots sporting club. This will also give people in regional Victoria a better chance to access VIS facilities and expertise.
$100,000 will improve VIS data management systems, helping them to better keep track of athlete numbers, results and performance.
We are proud to continue funding the first-class high performance sport development programs at the VIS so more aspiring stars can strive for Olympic, Paralympic and Commonwealth Games glory.
Australia won a total of 29 medals at the Rio Olympics, including eight gold. At the Paralympics, we collected 81 medals, including 22 gold, and finished fifth on the overall medals tally.
This funding is in addition to the $6.7 million we provide to the VIS to ensure it remains a leading provider of high performance sports programs for talented Victorian athletes.
The Turnbull Government today released its National Sports Plan which includes plans to establish a sports lottery. The Victorian Government will play an important role in the development of this plan and looks forward to ongoing discussions around its implementation.
The Victorian Budget 2017/18 invested $332.8 million to improve sports facilities – from grassroots to elite – to cement Victoria as the sporting capital of the world.
