More Investment To Bring Local Stories To The Screen

18 December 2016

From sport to health, comedy and gritty social drama, a diversity of Victorian voices, ideas and talents are headed to the big and small screens thanks to the Andrews Labor Government’s latest investment in film, television, online and documentary projects.

Minister for Creative Industries Martin Foley announced today that 17 film, television, online and documentary projects will share in more than $2.4 million through the Assigned Production Investment program and the Victorian Content Initiative – a partnership with the ABC.

Together, the projects are expected to generate more than 680 employment opportunities in the local screen sector and inject more than $23 million into the Victorian economy.

Many projects tell diverse Victorian stories including Sunshine, a new mini-series exploring the world of South Sudanese refugees in Melbourne, and League of Her Own, a one off television special focused on three female football players as they make the leap into the AFL Women's League.

Other projects will bring untold stories to light – from the ground-breaking 2015 tour to Germany by the Central Australian Aboriginal Women's Choir in Sacred Song, to Shalom Bollywood: The Untold Story of Indian Cinema, which reveals the major impact of the Indian Jewish community on the world's largest film industry.

In feature films, Victorian Director Fred Schepisi will head to Italy for Andorra – a romantic thriller starring Guy Pearce, Toni Collette, Gillian Anderson, Clive Owen and Vanessa Redgrave. The film will be post produced in Victoria.

Six projects, including the second series of The Ex PM starring Shaun Micallef and Ronny Chieng: International Student, have been supported as part of a Film Victoria partnership with the ABC, which supports Victorian television and online projects.
