New research shows Victoria’s tourism industry is boosting Victoria’s
economy by $15.1 billion a year and providing jobs for more than
179,000 people.
Tourism and Major Events Minister Tim Holding said the research conducted by the Sustainable Tourism Cooperative Research Centre (STCRC) showed the strength of the state’s tourism industry.
“The Brumby Government and tourism operators right around Victoria are working hard to boost international, interstate and local visitor numbers and expenditure,” Mr Holding said.
“The Tourism Satellite Account (TSA) 2006-07 results highlight the strength of Victoria’s tourism industry which continues to have a significant impact on Victoria’s economy.
“Compared with the 2003-04 TSA results, the combined direct and indirect economic impact of tourism has increased by 13.2 per cent, well above the national growth figure of 10.4 per cent.”
“With a growth rate of 8.8 per cent, over the period 2003-04 to 2006-07, Victoria’s tourism employment is also above the national average of 7.6 per cent.
“In 2006-07 the Victorian tourism industry directly accounted for 102,200 jobs, a 4 per cent share of employment within Victoria. By incorporating the indirect employment impact of tourism, this figure rises to 179,200 jobs, 7 per cent of employment within the state.”
Mr Holding said a robust tourism industry is vital given difficult global economic conditions.
“Victoria’s world-class major events and diverse tourism attractions continue to boost the state’s appeal in the holiday and leisure market,” he said.
“Victoria’s award winning Jigsaw campaign has helped promote the diversity of each part of Victoria including our natural attractions, gourmet food and wine and our culture.”

Note: Previous data used to measure the value of tourism to Victoria (for the reference year 2003-04) was provided to Tourism Victoria by Access Economics and was the latest available at the time. These estimates have now been superseded by the new STCRC TSA results, which are nationally aligned and accepted. Moving forward it is important to compare like with like.
