Passengers will benefit from easier access to tram services in the city and inner north following the completion of two new platform stops which allow easier access for Victorians with a disability.
“The new platform tram stop at Nicholson Street and Albert Street opened today and on Saturday June 7, the Flinders and Spring Street stop will be ready for passenger use,” Ms Kosky said. “The Brumby Government is committed to improving tram travel times, reliability, accessibility and safety across Melbourne’s tram network as part of our recently announced Keeping Melbourne Moving plan. “We are further improving tram services and building on recent patronage gains by installing platform tram stops to improve tram efficiency and passenger safety in the CBD. “Independent research of over 500 city tram users has shown that 90 per cent of the passengers surveyed gave a positive rating of the city’s platform stops.” Yarra Trams chief executive officer Dennis Cliche said the company was working hard to make the tram network accessible for all. “We want to ensure that reliable, accessible and sustainable transport options are available across Melbourne,” Mr Cliche said. The new platform tram stops replace older style tram stops and provide improved and safer access to trams for all members of the community, including people with disabilities. They include ramps for wheelchair and pram access, as well as passenger shelters, seating, lighting and screens that show when the next tram will arrive. Platform tram stops have already been installed in many locations throughout the city, most recently in Flinders Street at Swanston Street. “We are providing quick action now to keep Melbourne’s traffic flowing during peak times,” Ms Kosky said. Trams are an important part of Melbourne’s public transport network and the Think Tram program ensures that tram travel remains a viable transport alternative, creating a greener and more sustainable city.
