NEW PLATFORM STOPS FOR MELBOURNE’S CULTURAL HEART

The first stage of the Brumby Government’s St Kilda Road tram strategy is complete and has improved access to Melbourne’s cultural precinct with better passenger amenity and an extra track to improve tram reliability.

Public Transport Minister Lynne Kosky said the improvements would mean easier access to the arts and theatre buildings and would be embraced by regular commuters and visitors to Melbourne.

“During peak times, a tram every minute passes the State Theatre and that is why we took action to improve the running of services on Melbourne’s busiest tram corridor,” Ms Kosky said.

The works undertaken by Yarra Trams includes two new platform stops outside the Arts Centre and a 69-metre section of third track to allow trams to change direction without disrupting other services.

Because of the large number of trams and passengers using St Kilda Road, currently any incident which delays one tram can affect trams on up to nine routes.

Ms Kosky said the new turning track installed at Southbank Boulevard meant trams going straight were not delayed by those turning right and passenger amenities at the Arts Centre have been improved.

“The new platform tram stops replace older style tram stops. The benefits include   improved and safer access to trams for all members of the community, including people with disabilities,” Ms Kosky said.

“The Arts Centre precinct can be accessed easily by people in wheelchairs and those people who have prams. Passengers will also appreciate the overhead shelters, seating, lighting and screens that show when the next tram will arrive.

“St Kilda Road is often used as a termination point for trams during Melbourne’s major events. New infrastructure needs to be put in place to handle these events as efficiently as possible, providing safe passenger disembarking arrangements.”

The St Kilda Road Tram Strategy is part of the Brumby Government’s 10-year $10.5 billion Meeting our Transport Challenges action plan and will deliver a comprehensive package of tram infrastructure upgrades to move trams safely and efficiently through the busy thoroughfare.

The next stage of the St Kilda Road tram project will include the construction of extra tracks at the Domain Interchange to allow turning trams to do so without delaying trams behind them. A major tram stop upgrade along the length of St Kilda Road will follow.
