Maribyrnong tram passengers can now enjoy easier and safer access to trams thanks to a $2.7 million Brumby Government upgrade of new platform stops along Rosamond Road and River Street.
“The Brumby Government is taking action to make public transport more accessible and we have upgraded four stops in each direction along Route 82 to improve safety, access and comfort for passengers,” Ms Kosky said. “These platform stops will significantly improve the travel experience for tram passengers getting on and off at Highpoint, Maribyrnong Secondary College and local sporting facilities. “Platform stops are not only wider and more accessible, but they are custom made for the introduction of new low-floor trams to Melbourne’s tram network. “In addition, the provision of shelters and additional seating means waiting passengers will be comfortable in all conditions.” Member for Footscray Marsha Thomson MP said the new platform stops were welcome news for tram users in Maribyrnong and surrounding suburbs. “Route 82 carries close to 5,000 passengers on a typical weekday. These new stops will increase efficiency on the route, which is great news for all passengers,” Ms Thomson said. Maribyrnong City Council Mayor Cr Michelle MacDonald said the stop upgrades were perfectly positioned to provide improved access to Maribyrnong’s activity centre. “These platform stop upgrades will greatly improve public transport access not only for travellers in our city, but also people from surrounding suburbs accessing the great shops, schools and sporting facilities in our area.” Ms Kosky said the Brumby Government was committed to providing safer, more accessible public transport options for all commuters. “In May 2006, this Government committed $250 million over 10 years to make public transport more accessible,” Ms Kosky said. “The new platforms at tram stops 51, 52, 53 and 54 along Rosamond Road and River Street are fully compliant with the Disability Discrimination Act (1992) and its standards for public transport. “The Brumby Government is committed to meeting the requirements of the Act to make tram travel more accessible for users of all needs.” |
