DOCKLANDS TRAM EXTENDED INTO WATERFRONT CITY

Friday, 25 July 2008
Tram access to Melbourne’s bustling and popular Docklands precinct is even more convenient with the route 86 tram extended from Harbour Esplanade into Docklands Drive and Waterfront City.

Public Transport Minister Lynne Kosky said the new extension which started today would provides a direct link from Southern Cross Station right into the heart of Docklands and the popular restaurant and bar precincts at Waterfront City.

“The Brumby Government is taking action to improve public transport services and that is why we have increased the frequency of weekday tram services into Docklands Drive by 65 per cent and weekend services by 110 per cent,” Ms Kosky said.

“The Docklands precinct is growing rapidly and these changes respond to popular demand for better access to Waterfront City, NewQuay and the development of the Southern Star Observation Wheel.

“In peak periods there will be a tram service every four minutes and during off-peak times and during the day on weekends every six minutes.”

The number of additional daily services to and from Docklands Drive is:
•    Monday to Thursday -175;
•    Friday - 184;
•    Saturday - 183; and
•    Sunday - 118.

Ms Kosky said the changes to the tram services were being introduced prior to the opening of the 120-metre high Southern Star Observation Wheel in October.

“I encourage people to take the number 86 tram to visit the Observation Wheel, which is set to become a major Melbourne landmark when it begins operations,” Ms Kosky said.

Route 30, the La Trobe Street shuttle from St Vincent’s Plaza which currently terminates at Spencer Street during daytime peak periods, will now terminate in Docklands at Harbour Esplanade (Central Pier) from first to last service.

The changes to the tram timetables for tram routes 86 and 30 will begin today.
