Restored W-Class tram prepares to grace Melbourne’s city streets again

TRANSCRIPT:

We believe the W-Class has a special place in the tram network, a special place in the memories and understanding of the tram network by commuters and indeed by Melburnians on a wider basis.

There is no doubt the W-Class has long been the symbol of the tram in Melbourne and trams are very much a symbol of Melbourne.

And to be able to embark on a restoration of a number of these trams, I think, is a positive and the tram behind me is nearing completion – we are very pleased about that.

It will be the first of those under this program.

It is scheduled to return to the network in October and it will return to the City Circle line.

After that, there is another online and we expect a couple more as well.

The $8 million has been set aside to deal with this program.

We believe it is a good investment – it is a positive investment into the network – but also into the iconic nature of our tram network in Melbourne.

It is a tourism benefit, it is a symbolic benefit, but it is also good for jobs, good for the history of this state and good for everything that the tram network stands for.

So I am very pleased to be here today to mark the near completion of this tram – this particular tram, which will be joining the network in October.
