Students unite for Victorian State Schools Spectacular

Friday, 07 September 2012

Hisense Arena will be ablaze with colour tomorrow (Saturday) when more than 3,000 students in dazzling costumes light up the stage in the Victorian State Schools Spectacular, It's all about Love.

The professionally-staged production will captivate audiences with an 80-piece orchestra, 1,500 voice choir, 1,400 dancers, 23 lead vocalists, 40 principal dancers, 40 ensemble dancers, 18 backing vocalists, and 30 circus performers in an explosion of high-energy dance routines and show-stopping vocals.Education Minister Martin Dixon said the Spectacular was a great opportunity for the public to see the depth of talent in Victoria's government schools.

"The calibre of performers in this year's show is truly extraordinary, and I'm sure many will go on to pursue careers in the arts," Mr Dixon said.

"But all students, regardless of whether they choose a career on the stage, will leave the show with a rich range of new skills, experiences and confidence."

The Spectacular, which is supported by the Victorian Coalition Government, will be directed by a stellar team including:

  • Kelley Abbey, Dance Director (internationally renowned choreographer for productions including So You Think You Can Dance - US and Australia, Happy Feet, Boy from Oz, Fame and Footloose the Musical);
  • Chong Lim, Musical Director (musical director for John Farnham, Channel 7's Dancing with the Stars, The Logie Awards, Kylie Minogue's Intimate and Live Tour); and
  • Neill Gladwin, Creative Director (best known for his Sydney 2000 Lawnmower Man segment and as one half of the internationally acclaimed comedy duo Los Trios Ringbarkus).

"The Coalition Government is proud to give Victorian government school students from regional and metropolitan schools the unique opportunity to work with high-profile industry experts on a professional production of this scale," Mr Dixon said.

"Congratulations to the cast, teachers, parents and everyone involved for the many months of rehearsals and commitment to bring us this inspirational showcase of Victorian talent."

It's all about Love will take audiences on a journey to celebrate love and friendship in all its forms through song, dance and music.The Spectacular will feature 40 toe-tapping tunes from pop, rock and classical artists including Adele, Jessie J, Jennifer Lopez, Cole Porter, LFMAO, Philip Glass and The Beatles; and a feast of high-energy tap, Broadway jazz, hip hop, contemporary and classical ballet routines.
