Stawell Airport cleared for take-off

Tuesday, 07 August 2012

The multi-million dollar upgrade of Stawell Airport was officially opened today by Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional and Rural Development Peter Ryan.

Mr Ryan said the completion of the $2.9 million upgrade works would pave the way for larger aircraft and significantly increased capacity at the airport.

"Stawell Airport supports more than 12,000 air traffic movements per year, including fire bombing and spotting, aerial agriculture operations, charter and scenic flights," Mr Ryan said.

"The upgrade will enhance the potential for new businesses to establish at the airport and existing businesses to expand their operations, creating opportunities for job retention and creation.

"It will also build the airport's potential as a base for new import and export-related businesses such as cut flowers and perishable goods that require quick turnarounds into global markets."

Mr Ryan said the Victorian Coalition Government contributed $3.35 million towards the two-stage redevelopment project of the airport.

Some of the key improvements include:

  • Strengthening the main runway, including sealing and line marking works;
  • Upgrading the taxiway;
  • New runway lighting configuration;
  • Upgraded hangar access road and services, including perimeter fencing; and
  • New entrance and site signage.

Aviation Minister Gordon Rich-Phillips said the Coalition Government was delivering on its commitment to revitalise Victoria's regional aviation sector and secure manufacturing jobs.

"In addition to this funding, the Coalition Government allocated $20 million over four years in last year's Budget to establish the Regional Aviation Fund,"

"This major investment will support the enhancement and upgrading of infrastructure at public-use airports right across regional Victoria." Mr Rich-Phillips said.
