Live music roundtable established

Thursday, 12 July 2012

The Victorian Coalition Government has delivered on its commitment to establish a permanent live music industry roundtable, bringing together music industry representatives, licensees of live music venues, government and Victoria Police.

Policy ImplementedConsumer Affairs Minister Michael O'Brien launched the Roundtable today, and said the Roundtable would be a dedicated forum to quickly and effectively address liquor licensing issues affecting live music.

"The Roundtable has a diverse membership, including key representatives from the hospitality and live music industries, as well as regulatory bodies, planning experts and local council," Mr O'Brien said.

The Roundtable will be chaired by Ross Kennedy of the Department of Justice.

"The Live Music Roundtable will contribute to a vibrant, successful and responsible live music industry, and promote best practice for safe and well managed music venues across Victoria.

"The Coalition Government recognises that live music is an important part of the social and cultural fabric of Victoria, and that it provides a considerable economic benefit for the state with many people employed directly or indirectly in the industry."

Last year, the Coalition Government implemented another election commitment by passing legislation to amend the objects of the Liquor Control Reform Act 1998 to ensure that live music is an ongoing consideration in relation to all liquor licensing decisions.

Mr O'Brien said he looked forward to working with the Live Music Roundtable and developing a productive relationship with key industry participants.
