Thousands of students sit selective entry school exam today

Saturday, 16 June 2012

More than 2,700 of Victoria's brightest students will today fill the Royal Exhibition Building in Carlton to sit the annual entry test for a coveted spot at one of Victoria's four selective entry secondary schools.

Education Minister Martin Dixon has wished the Year 8 students good luck as they vie for almost 1000 Year 9 places next year at either Melbourne High School (boys only), The Mac.Robertson Girls' High School (girls only), Nossal High School in Berwick or Suzanne Cory High School in Werribee (both co-ed).

"I'm sure every student sitting the selective entry school exam today has been studying exceptionally hard to give themselves the greatest chance of securing a place at Victoria's best schools for high-achievers, and I wish them luck in their endeavours," Mr Dixon said.

"The number of applicants is a testament to the success of these schools and a huge vote of confidence in Victoria's government school system."

Mr Dixon said Victoria's selective entry schools are always among the highest-performing schools in the state. Mac.Robertson Girls' High School and Melbourne High School had seven students achieve perfect ATAR scores of 99.95 last year.

Nossal High School opened in 2010 and will have its first year 12 class next year. Suzanne Cory High School opened last year.

"The Victorian Coalition Government is proud to be supporting all of Victoria's selective entry schools which are providing academically-gifted students with the very best education," Mr Dixon said.

"The Coalition Government is providing families with more choice in education than ever before, with 25 schools so far funded under our $2.5 million School Specialisation Grants initiative where schools are now specialising in a range of fields including science, sports, sustainability or the arts."

Today's exam is a 3.5 hour common entrance test split into six parts: verbal reasoning; numerical reasoning; reading comprehension; mathematics; analytical written expression; and creative written expression.

Successful students will receive first round offers from 16 August via email. Subsequent offers will be made by the four schools until December.
