Victoria’s most innovative design talent sought

Monday, 21 May 2012

Applications are now open for the 2012 Premier's Design Awards which recognise and reward Victorian designers and businesses using exemplar design effectively and sustainably.

Premier Ted Baillieu said the awards recognised Victoria's design capabilities and businesses that invested in design to contribute to business success through increased market share, financial sustainability, and environmental and social outcomes

"Good design is one of the foundations of business innovation. As a capability and enabler, design drives the creation of attractive and highly functional products and services," Mr Baillieu said.

"I encourage Victorian-based businesses and designers to nominate their projects that illustrate the latest in design thinking and demonstrate excellence and innovation.

"For the first time, the awards feature an open entry process whereby both designers and users of design can nominate leading design projects.

"I'm delighted to announce that design icon Ken Cato will chair the judging panel, bringing a wealth of expertise to the 2012 awards," Mr Baillieu said.

The Premier's Design Awards provide an opportunity for businesses and the community to better understand the value of integrating design to make products and services more practical, efficient and attractive, and ultimately increase productivity and business outcomes.

Mr Baillieu said the Victorian Coalition Government viewed design as an important driver for innovation and in turn productivity growth.

"Design is a tool for Victorian businesses and communities to grow and develop, locally and globally, increasing Victoria's overall economic prosperity and standard of living," Mr Baillieu said.

Applicants will be judged on the impact of design on business performance and design excellence in setting new standards for product or service delivery, functionality and appeal.

The Premier's Design Awards winners will be announced on Wednesday 19 September 2012 in conjunction with the announcement of the Melbourne Design Awards.

Applications open today and will close on Tuesday 3 July 2012. For further information, including details of how to apply, visit www.business.vic.gov.au/PDA
