Minister for Youth Affairs Ryan Smith and Member for South Barwon Andrew Katos today visited Barwon Youth Geelong which will receive $270,000 in funding from the Victorian Coalition Government.
Barwon Youth's Big Brothers Big Sisters program will receive $135,000 over three years to provide mentoring opportunities for young people between the ages of 12-18. The program provides leadership, direction and support to young people experiencing personal difficulties by matching them with a positive adult role model.
A further $135,000 over three years will fund information, referral and support services for young people aged 12-25 in the region to connect them to community programs and resources.
Mr Smith said that Barwon Youth was one of 102 successful community organisations across the state to receive funding in the Coalition Government's $12.3 million Engage! grant program.
"Barwon Youth delivers two fantastic programs that have proven to be successful in the community. I have been impressed by the quality mentoring program and support services offered to young people in the region," Mr Smith said.
"I look forward to hearing more about the outcomes from these programs over the next three years,"
Mr Katos said Barwon Youth had supported thousands of young people in the Geelong region since it was established in 1981.
"The Victorian Coalition Government is committed to supporting young people in Geelong. This funding will go a long way to ensuring these services continue to support young people in our region," Mr Katos said.
Barwon Youth Acting CEO John Townsend said Barwon Youth was excited about receiving Engage! funding for their local support and mentoring programs.
"We're committed to creating meaningful connections with local young people, the community and the youth sector," Mr Townsend said.
