New affordable housing for older people at Avondale Heights

Minister for Housing Wendy Lovell has officially opened new affordable housing for over 50s at Avondale Heights.

Ms Lovell joined tenants and representatives of Wintringham Housing to mark the occasion at the new Jack Gash Housing apartments in Westminster Drive today.

"We know that for older people it's important that they can 'age in place'," Ms Lovell said.

"That means having access to the local services and agencies that will be important to them as they age, rather than having to leave what may have been their homes for many years.

"The Jack Gash Housing apartments bring together independent aged living facilities with the adjacent Ron Conn Nursing Home, making it the perfect combination," Ms Lovell said.

Members for Western Metropolitan Region Bernie Finn and Andrew Elsbury said the new social housing was a great example of enabling people to remain in their community, close to their families and support systems.

The Jack Gash Housing complex consists of 18 one-bedroom, self-contained units for lower-income, single aged people who were either homeless or were at risk of homelessness.

The development complements the Ron Conn Nursing Home and features curving pathways and unobtrusive fencing, so the two buildings integrate seamlessly.

Development of the Jack Gash Housing apartments cost $2.7 million, with $2.195 million provided by the Victorian Government through the National Affordable Housing Agreement.

Wintringham Housing owns and manages the 18 new homes and made a significant contribution towards the final development cost, with a generous philanthropic contribution from the Peter and Lyndy White Foundation.

The Victorian Government contributed $3.4 million to the building of the Ron Conn Nursing Home, with the Commonwealth Government contributing the remainder.

"I'm told Jack Gash and Ron Conn were old mates when they lived at Gordon House in Melbourne and both lived at Wintringham in their declining years," Ms Lovell said.

"I can think of no better way of celebrating that spirit of mateship and compassion than in naming these facilities after Jack and Ron."
