Youth media's top achievers recognised

Tuesday, 21 February 2012

Minister for Youth Affairs Ryan Smith presented three SYN FM Awards as part of the youth-led community media organisation's annual awards last night.

Mr Smith presented the awards for Best Seasonal Radio Program of the Year to Play it Again, Sam (But Fast! And Bulbous) ; Radio Producer of the Year to Hayley Crane and Emma Buckley Lennox (Panorama) and Radio Presenter of the Year to James Findlay, The Naughty Rude Show.

"Congratulations to the winners in all 19 categories of the SYN FM Awards. You have all shown the highest level of creativity, originality and technical quality in your programs," Mr Smith said.

"These awards are a tremendous achievement which I am sure can only lead to bigger and better things for you in media, or whatever career you may choose.

"The Victorian Coalition Government is committed to developing opportunities for young people to be heard and be involved in their local communities," Mr Smith said.

"SYN has demonstrated a long-standing commitment to increasing opportunities for young people to develop skills and career pathways in media.

"We look forward to celebrating even more success from the exciting programs and presenters like the ones receiving tonight's awards.

SYN General Manager Tahlia Azaria said she could not be prouder of the contributions made by SYN volunteers in the past year.

"SYN volunteers always go above and beyond -they're constantly pushing the boundaries - and it's fantastic we can recognise them at such a fun event every year," Ms Azaria said.

In addition to providing SYN FM with $200,000 over four years for training programs, the Government is also providing $200,000 through the Be Heard! Community Radio Grants program to community radio stations in rural and regional Victoria to train and mentor young people.

"This innovative program gives young people in rural and regional Victoria the opportunity to showcase their talents in radio and receive further skills and training that they may not otherwise have," Mr Smith said.
