One of Australia's best known choreographers will keep young dancers on their toes in this year's State Schools Spectacular.
Minister for Education Martin Dixon today announced star performer and choreographer Kelley Abbey would take on the key role of dance director.
Internationally renowned, Ms Abbey brings a wealth of experience to the show, having worked on So You Think You Can Dance (Australia and the US) and Oscar winning film Happy Feet, as well as choreographing stage shows such as the Boy from Oz, Fame and Footloose the Musical.
"Ms Abbey is one of Australia's most highly regarded choreographers and I am thrilled to announce she will have a major role in this year's Spectacular," Mr Dixon said.
"Her expertise combined with the talent of our school students is bound to create something truly special."
The State Schools Spectacular will feature almost 3,000 students on stage and behind the scenes from primary and secondary schools from around the state.
Months of rehearsals will culminate in two performances at Hisense Arena on September 8 in front of 18,000 people.
The 2012 Spectacular also has a new partnership with the Australian Chamber Orchestra, providing tutoring and mentoring to student string musicians.
"In addition, two talented students will be chosen to undertake a Masterclass with the ACO's artistic director, Richard Tognetti AO," Mr Dixon said.
Red Energy has also joined the Spectacular this year as Community Partner, and as part of this partnership will be providing a travel fund which regional schools can access to assist with travel expenses.
The Spectacular's star studded, behind the scenes line-up will also include well known Melbourne dancing identities Troy Phillips and Deon Nuku as associate dance directors.
Acclaimed comic and director Neill Gladwin will be creative director while Chong Lim, well known for his work with the John Farnham band and Dancing with the Stars, will be musical director.
"It is very exciting to be able to bring so many talented and experienced people together in one production," Mr Dixon said.
