Planning Minister and Simon Ramsay embark on tour of Western Victoria

Minister for Planning Matthew Guy will undertake a three-day road trip of Western Victoria this week.

Mr Guy agreed to the tour upon the request of the Member for Western Victoria Simon Ramsay during the final Parliamentary sitting week in 2011.

"Toward the end of 2011, Mr Ramsay and I met a number of councils during meetings in Ballarat. We decided it was important to visit and speak with many more councils in Western Victoria," Mr Guy said.

"It is important that planning issues are of the greatest importance to regional and rural municipalities, so we spend time in each location and speak face-to-face with both the people who make decisions at the local level and the residents themselves. It is an invaluable opportunity and one I am looking forward to."

Mr Ramsay said he was pleased the Minister had made himself available for the tour which would include eight shire councils including the Pyrenees, Ararat, Hindmarsh, West Wimmera, Yarriambiack, Horsham, Northern Grampians and Central Goldfields.

"Each of these councils has issues unique to their own areas. But some of the issues are relevant to other parts of the state, such as flood recovery, population growth, availability of services, transport and employment," Mr Ramsay said.

"Of course, planning issues face all councils and these eight councils are no different. The visits will also enable the Planning Minister to discuss the recently announced $2.8 million plan to provide a Planning Flying Squad.

"The Squad is set up to help and support councils that are overwhelmed with planning matters. It will provide planning specialists who will work with councils to help ease the backlog of planning requests and other planning matters that require short-term expertise and help," Mr Ramsay said.

The Minister for Planning and Mr Ramsay look forward to visiting a number of towns including Beaufort, Nhill, Ararat, Kaniva, Warracknabeal, Murtoa, Stawell and Maryborough.
