Minister for Environment and Climate Change Ryan Smith has launched the EPA Victoria's new i-phone litter application, Report Litter, which has been designed to make it easier for the public to report littering.
Minister Smith said the free iPhone app would be online today, allowing every Victorian to be part of the solution to littering.
"Victorians can now use an iPhone and the Report Litter app to report littering as it happens. The Report Litter app will provide Victorians a new and speedy way to report litter," Mr Smith said.
"There's nothing worse than seeing fast food wrappers or cigarette butts thrown from a car window and feeling frustrated at not having the opportunity to report it. The good thing is now we have made it easier to stop littering by reporting the litterer to EPA instantly.
"All you have to do is use the app to send the EPA a description of the incident, including the car rego, make and model, colour, location, date and time along with a brief description of the litter within seven days so that the EPA can take action.
"Fines for throwing your rubbish out of a car range from $120 to almost $250 - so with more ways to report littering, those doing the wrong thing will be forced to think twice as you don't know who is watching."
Already EPA Victoria's public litter reporting system allows the community to report people littering from or near their cars. In 2010, EPA received 16,836 reports alone.
"By 2013 it is expected more people will access the internet via mobile devices than via desktop computers. Litter reporting is one of EPA's most popular services and this new functionality will further raise awareness of the issue," Mr Smith said.
Cigarette butts are the most littered item in Australia, making up a staggering 58 per cent of all items littered.
Victorian councils spend $8.5 million annually cleaning-up illegally dumped rubbish and road side litter. Dumped rubbish and roadside litter costs Victorian councils nearly $22, 000 a day to clean up (figures from VLAA website).
Report Litter is a free download from the iTunes store now.
