$213,000 to bring the arts to the classroom

Six Victorian arts organisations will swap the stage for the classroom in 2012 thanks to the latest round of grants through the Victorian Government's Extended School Residencies program.

Minister for Education Martin Dixon today visited Mahogany Rise Primary School in Frankston North to announce the six Victorian schools that will share in $213,000 in grants to support a range of arts projects that will extend and strengthen student learning across the curriculum.

"Engagement with the arts can have a powerful effect on young people," Mr Dixon said.

"The arts teach us how to think creatively, explore possibilities and take challenges in new and diverse ways. These skills help us in a range of areas beyond the arts, leading to higher self-esteem, encouraging teamwork and supporting social and personal development."

Through the Extended School Residencies program, arts organisations will work within a school for a minimum of two terms.

Mr Dixon said this round supports projects that will explore a range of art forms from writing to sound art, photography and music, physical theatre, performance, and even an iPad-based digital artwork.

"Extended School Residencies projects benefit entire school communities," Mr Dixon said

"Teachers gain skills, students learn arts skills and explore new ways of learning. Our artists benefit too; gaining inspiration from new collaborators engaging with new and diverse audiences across the state."

These findings are supported in a new evaluation project, also launched today by Mr Dixon that investigates the impacts of arts partnerships in schools.

Partnerships between schools and the professional arts sector: Evaluation of Impact on Student Outcomes – a joint research project between Arts Victoria and the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development – found partnerships between arts organisations and schools improved student engagement, extended student learning and led to skills development for students and teachers.
