Doncaster Rail planning study underway with contract awarded

Minister for Public Transport Terry Mulder today announced that the $6.5 million planning work would start immediately for Doncaster rail.

"The Coalition Government wants to provide the most efficient, long-term public transport solution for people living and working along this corridor," Mr Mulder said.

Mr Mulder said the detailed investigations would examine a number of route options for a high quality heavy rail link to Doncaster.

"Establishing a new rail link is a major undertaking," Mr Mulder said.

"Extensive investigations are required to provide a full assessment of what constructing a new rail line to Doncaster would involve."

Mr Mulder said the study team would work closely with local councils as part of the study to identify key challenges and priorities for communities in the surrounding area.

Member for Doncaster Mary Wooldridge said the Coalition Government had listened to local residents and was now taking action.

"An important part of the investigations will be consultation with the local community. Throughout the study there will be a number of opportunities for the community to provide their input," Ms Wooldridge said.

The study is being led by Tim Gosbell from URS Australia, who will independently coordinate and review a number of technical studies as well as lead the community consultation process.

Mr Gosbell has over 23 years experience in engineering and transport planning and has served as Chairman of Engineers Australia Victoria Division.
