Significant revitalisation for Wodonga

Planning Minister Matthew Guy today announced that central Wodonga will be greatly revitalised by a project to be delivered by the new Urban Renewal Authority.

The Victorian Coalition Government views the central Wodonga project as extremely important for regional Victoria and this is the first new project to be managed by the Urban Renewal Authority.

"I have written to the Minister for Public Transport to commence the necessary arrangements to transfer control of the project and land from VicTrack to the Urban Renewal Authority as soon as possible," Mr Guy said.

"I would like to thank VicTrack for its major contribution towards redeveloping this area of Wodonga. However, because this particular site is a substantial urban renewal project, and is not in VicTrack's area of development expertise in the rail environment, the Urban Renewal Authority is better placed with its expertise and resources to take the planning forward for the central Wodonga project and deliver the vision for a vibrant new heart for the city."

The draft development plan for the central Wodonga site includes:

  • reshaping the town centre, doubling the size of the existing CBD
  • a pedestrian-friendly environment with shared access pathways
  • better transport facilities for local buses, coaches and taxis
  • modern retail and office space
  • a four or five-star hotel with conference and exhibition facilities
  • townhouse-style accommodation in the heart of the city
  • straightening of Elgin Boulevard and extending the existing roads across VicTrack land, and
  • new urban squares for community gatherings

Mr Guy said VicTrack had done considerable work over the last 18 months to develop a sound plan for the regional centre in close consultation with the City of Wodonga, the local community and many other stakeholders.

"VicTrack has also progressed many of the essential activities that must be completed before any development can proceed, including environmental assessment, removal of extensive rail infrastructure and planning of roads and other works.

"The new Urban Renewal Authority will draw heavily on VicTrack's work to date and its draft development plan, which provides a foundation for planning for the city's future commercial and community development," Mr Guy said.

Member for Benambra Bill Tilley said he was appreciative of the extensive project work undertaken by the City of Wodonga and VicTrack and was looking forward to the project continuing under the Urban Renewal Authority.

Mr Guy said the government would ensure that there was a seamless handover in the management of the Wodonga project so that the momentum of the project was maintained.

"A Project Director from VicTrack will be assigned to the Urban Renewal Authority to ensure a smooth transition and to enable continuous liaison with the City of Wodonga and the community," Mr Guy said.
